This NRHP-listed district developed between roughly 1865 and 1920 and is centered on the 100 blocks of North and South Jefferson Street and East and West Main Street, making it the oldest residential concentration in town with roofs well over a century old on many structures. Dominant roof types on the Italianate and Classical Revival wood frame homes include aged asphalt shingles over original wood decking, and the steep pitches and complex intersecting lines common to late-Victorian architecture trap debris and hold moisture after storms. A spearhead echo derecho tracked directly through Silver Lake in May 2017 with winds estimated at 85 to 90 mph, and Doppler radar has detected hail at or near Silver Lake on more than 40 recorded occasions, making storm age inspections on these older roofs a regular need.
